The good news is that the base flavors aren't bad. But the Dirty Shirley is cloyingly sweet and has almost no nuance. ![]() Earlier in the year the Dirty Shirley seemed poised to go viral, much like the whipped lemonades and Aperol Spritzes of seasons past. To turn a Shirley Temple (Sprite and grenadine cherry syrup) dirty, you'll simply spike it with booze such as vodka or rum. This easy cocktail is sweet, a little tart, refreshing, and so delicious. It was a childhood standby when you wanted to feel fancy when out to dinner, and guess what it’s still just as good. Some have dubbed this adult version of the classic kid's drink the sip of the summer, but certainly not me. A Dirty Shirley is the classic Shirley Temple drink with added vodka for adults. The queen (or perhaps princess) of non-alcoholic cocktails, the Shirley Temple has it all flavor, fizz, faux-sophistication. With summer dwindling down to the final few weeks, we're out to salvage this summer sipper with a couple of spins on the "drink of the summer" with some recipe spins that don't suck. You can always add more, but we find this to be the perfect amount to. Next, add 1/4th cup of pineapple juice to the wine glass. We start with the philosophy that less is more grenadine is sweet so you don’t want to make the mistake of overdoing it. Now, we love an easy drink recipe (looking at you, Aperol Spritz) but not if it doesn't taste good, and this spiked version of a Shirley Temple is too sweet - and a little basic.
